Český Krumlov, Czechia
June 2023

Český Krumlov is an amazing little town, very photogenic, and should not be missed if you are ever within driving distance. The town dates back to the Middle Ages and is very well preserved, one of the reasons we found it so captivating! The Vltava River winds through town, very picturesque with the old bridges and the colorful restaurant patios along the water.

We were there on a day trip from Prague, and with the town being so small and compact, there was plenty of time for us to visit the castle, walk the castle gardens where we had a picnic, meander through the town, and end with a relaxing dinner on the river.

Medieval Ambience

As my family is aware, this is exactly the kind of old town that I love, with picturesque alleys, colorful buildings, unique shops, old bridges and lots of character!

Along the Vltava River

The Vltava River meanders through the town, and is still quite narrow at this point. The streets follow the river which makes the Old Town walking tour very beautiful. The river is dotted with kayaks, paddle boats, old bridges and colorful patios filled with people.

Český Krumlov Castle

Český Krumlov is dominated by a 13th-century castle up on a hill, along with beautiful gardens on the slopes above. The bridge into the Lower Castle crosses over a bear moat...yes, bears used to help guard the castle! We saw two out of apparently four bears that still live in the moat today. From the top of the bell-tower, we had stunning panoramic views of the old town and the river.

The Lower Castle Tower was beautiful, and visible from everywhere in town.
